We will likely go through a lot of difficult moments in our life but most of those will start out when we are in school. In particular, middle school is a transitional moment in our lives that is somewhere between our youth and our adulthood. During those years, we are impressionable and it seems as if we want to do everything possible to stay in line with where everyone expects us to be. At the same time, however, the difficulties we face during those years can be undeniably painful, and that is what Olivia Vella had to say.
Like many young girls in seventh grade, Olivia was feeling the stress associated with keeping up with the Joneses. It was difficult and there are far too many ‘rules’ that are set up by our peers during those times that really can throw us off our game. For Olivia, it was a difficult time but she had an outlet because she loved writing. In fact, it was during her seventh-grade writing class that she penned a poem and gave it in front of everyone one day. She did it in class at Queen Creek Middle School in Arizona and after it was shared online, it went viral for all the right reasons.
If you think back to giving a public part in school, you likely remember the stress that is associated with it. Olivia likely felt strange because of having to get up in front of the school as well, but she had something to say, and everyone needed to hear it. She wanted people to understand what it was like to live her life and she did it through a unique poem.
At one point, she talked about every part of her outfit being uncomfortable, and even though she spent hours trying to look pretty, she would never be as good as other girls at the school. It’s a moment that most seventh graders have experienced, and it is one you can live through her eyes and feel all the emotions that our children feel. Watch it for yourself in the following video:
