There are times when we may beat the odds and we didn’t even try to do so. I’m not necessarily talking about winning the lottery, I’m talking about beating the odds in life.
One family that was able to do this and do it twice is Allison Spooner and Dean Durrant. They live in Hampshire, England and they had quite a surprise when their first set of twins was born in 2001.
Like their parents, the children had different colored skin. Lauren, one of the twins was born with white skin and light eyes, similar to her mother. Hayleigh, all the other hand, was born with darker skin and hair similar to her father.
It certainly does beat the odds to have biracial twins but it is not unheard of. This family got another surprise, however, when they had another set of twins. Those baby girls look up to their older sisters, but they also have something in common with them that is unusual. Like their older sisters, they are also biracial twins.
Most people would consider twins to be a miracle on their own. If you want to consider the odds, having twins is about one in 500. For two sets of biracial twins, the odds are closer to more than 1 million.
This probably leads you to a number of questions, such as what life was like when they were growing up. Hayleigh had an interview with The Sun, saying:
“Some people can be really rude. They’ll say, ‘You’re lying, you aren’t twins — prove it!’ So we’ll reel off the same address or pull our passports out. It’s nice to see the shock on people’s faces. When we went to college it was difficult because there were lots of groups of Asian, white, and black kids. The black group was trying to integrate me and I was like, ‘This is my white twin sister.’ No one could believe it. People look at us like it’s some kind of miracle.”
The mother was also still in shock that the babies were turning 18. Ever since they were younger, they continued to be best friends and even though some people say they are not twins, they share the same mother and the same birthday.
Although they are twins, they do have their own interests. In some ways they are similar but in other ways, they are quite different. One thing that is interesting about them is that they often finish each other’s sentences. Like many twins, they seem to have a special connection.
They also miss each other when they are not together. Growing up, they slept in the same room and if one of them spent the night at a friend’s house, it would be difficult for the other. Now that they are away at school, they are spending more and more time apart.
The younger twins look up to their older sisters and even call them their heroes. You can see more in this video:
