A few years ago, Jimmy Fallon decided to keep the fun going after a night at the Grammy Awards with his own special. He hosted a musical performance of a song he wrote and his guests were Will Ferrell and Christina Aguilera. The song the unlikely trio danced to was “Tight Pants,” and they took to the stage in (of course) skin-tight pants in white, and they all boasted bowl haircut wigs. The most epic thing about the performance, however, and the star of the show, were the retro colorful striped sweaters that they all wore. Every one was uniquely different, and we have to wonder how many thrift stores had to be scoured to find this awesome variety of sweaters.
When it comes to music, Jimmy’s been creating comedy out of music for most of his life. Not only does he crack jokes, but he’s also an excellent dancer and singer. As it turns out, Jimmy is also a songwriter and a pretty darn good one at that. Jimmy himself wrote “Tight Pants.” Now, the “Tight Pants” song is wacky, indeed, but the skill that went into writing and composing it is apparent. Of course, the song is wacky and goofy by design, because it’s Jimmy Fallon. When Jimmy was a teenager, he discovered “Saturday Night Live” and became obsessed with the show. He watched it religiously, and his mother, Gloria, spent countless hours with him practicing and reenacting the skits.
Moms do this kind of thing. I spent countless hours doing stuff like this with my kids to prepare for musical theater, band, drill team, and other things. However, most of us don’t dream that our kids will someday grow up to be as successful in the cutthroat world of entertainment that Jimmy Fallon is. But Jimmy was serious about one thing and his entire life centered around it: being on “Saturday Night Live” one day. In fact, when he first got into the entertainment industry, he got an agent. Every gig he landed had specific clauses that if he got offered a job with “Saturday Night Life,” he would be released from his contract.
Then, when he was 23 years old, he got his big break. At the time, Tina Fey was the head writer at “Saturday Night Life,” and she said that she has only seen one other person in her entire time with the show be as prepared as Jimmy was for his audition. She said that if he needed to walk on stage that night and perform, he could have. when he was finally asked to join the show, he told the creator, Lorne Michaels, “I’m going to make you proud.” I’d say he has succeeded on all counts.
