The Bee Gees were a group of three remarkable brothers who formed a pop music group when they were children, gaining recognition when they became teens. Barry, Maurice, and Robin Gibb found significant success in the 1960s and 1970s, with their fame and success peaking in the 1970s disco era. Their specialty was their three-part light harmonies, which have chords with notes that are arranged within narrow and tight ranges. These types of harmonies have no more than one octave between the bottom and top notes. The Bee Gees are noted for Barry Gibb’s amazing falsetto and Robin Gibb’s clear vibrato, and both of these served as signatures and hallmarks of the group’s lead vocals. They enjoyed a long career, but sadly Robin Gibb died in 2012 and his fraternal twin brother Maurice Gibb died in 2003.
Losing his beloved brothers was naturally very hard on Barry Gibb, and he recently said that he’s the “last man standing.” He seems baffled by this, probably because he was the oldest of all of the Gibb brothers. To make matters even worse, according to Barry, when each of his brothers died, they died at a time when he and the brother weren’t getting along well at the times of their deaths. To clarify, every brother he lost was lost during a moment of tension between Barry and the brother he was losing. How does Barry feel about this? He says he’ll have to live the rest of his life knowing that and reflecting on it. It has to be devastating to lose a sibling, but doubly so if you’re not getting along with that sibling when they die. In spite of all of that, Barry maintains that the brothers all shared a remarkable closeness with each other.
He said that it’s hard to explain how they all felt about each other, and adds that no one ever really knew how the three of them loved each other or felt about each other. He said that making music with his brother was a unifying thing and that the three of them essentially “became one person” because they shared the same dream. This is what Barry Gibb misses more than anything else, he says. Someone to share his dreams with. “To Love Somebody” was written by Robin and Barry Gibb and was the second single from their “Bee Gees 1st” album, which was their first international album and was released in 1967. Barry Gibb told Piers Morgan in an interview that of all the many songs he and his brothers have written, “To Love Somebody” was his favorite because it has a “clear, emotional message.”
Very likely when Keith Urban covered the Bee Gees hit classic song “To Love Somebody,” all of this was going through Barry’s mind. This video was taken at the Grammy Awards during a special tribute to a legendary group, the Bee Gees. Keith’s performance moved Barry Gibb to tears. His wife, Maureen, seemed to be deeply moved as well as she sat beside her husband. Watch this heart-wrenching video below.
