When I was in high school, it was a couple of decades before the new-ish trend of teachers being cool to surprise students. My teachers were not cool, and the ones that made an attempt to be were (I suspect) squashed before they got carried away. It’s only since long after I graduated and started adding some of my high school teachers to social media that I began to realize just how dang cool some of these folks were. Now, I can see my teachers traveling the world with “companions” (romantic ones!), going to Broadway plays, having messy play parties with grandkids, and doing just a whole lot of other stuff that makes me realize just how fun these people are and probably always were.
I like the trend that’s been popular for some years with teachers showing their human side, particularly during fun times at school like spirit weeks or homecoming weeks. I know that on the rare occasion in school that teachers resembled fun humans, it was absolutely delightful, so I know kids today feel the same way. But what defines “cool” for kids? I think I can speak knowledgeably and say that for kids, a teacher is cool when they do something that the students normally only see their peers do. Things like dancing, rapping music, dressing fashionably, and similar activities. A group of teachers at Toledo, Ohio’s Whitmer High School recently showed their students (and their principal!) just how dang cool they are.
In a homecoming pep rally, a group of teachers took the spirit to the next level when a couple of them stormed the stage, shocking the principal and pointing for him to leave the stage. Looking perplexed and shaking his head, the principal nevertheless complied. He didn’t have a choice. He was obviously outnumbered. The teachers then proceeded to dance energetically to Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson’s hit “Uptown Funk.” As the first small group of teachers is boogying on down, a little bit into the song, more teachers join them to start dancing. Clearly, this is going to be a flash mob, which is one of my favorite things ever. I love flash mobs.
As the group of teachers, who are dressed casually in jeans and t-shirts, are dancing, more dancing teachers start to join in and it starts to get wild. You can really tell that these amazing educators put a lot of work and practice into this, likely spending many hours of their free time learning these dance moves. Because let’s face it. I’m a middle-aged person now, and I know for a fact that most of these teachers likely had to work hard to learn these moves. The school’s security guard even gets into the routine, gun and all. Then one teacher starts breakdancing and the crowd goes wild. Kudos to them! Enjoy this awesome video.
