A few years ago, a Florida teacher was fired for grading students who failed to turn in any work with a score of zero. This flew in the face of school police as teachers at her school were required to give their students no less than a 50 percent score even if they didn’t turn in any work!
Daine Tirado had thought for many years and was an eighth-grade teacher working at Westgate K-8 school in Port St. Lucie, Florida. She believed in the old-fashioned idea of giving children the grades they earned.
Diane gave her students two full weeks to finish an assignment during one lesson.
And while most of her students turned in their assignments, some just decided to skip them altogether.
Since those students elected not to turn in anything, she gave them a zero, despite its policy against such grading. According to the school, the students should have “earned” a 50 percent grade to ensure they still got the lowest allowable passing grade.
After administrators learned of her actions, Tirado was fired. And the teacher decided to leave a little goodbye note on her whiteboard explaining to her students why she was fired.
Before leaving, Tirado took a picture of her final message and posted it on Facebook, where it quickly went viral.
She wished to use her message to spread awareness about the school’s misguided policy.
Meanwhile, her post sparked a huge discussion as most folks who commented on her post agreed with Tirado.
Many felt that it was unfair to the students who worked hard to simply hand out passing grades to every student no matter how much work they put in.
