We sometimes see parents doing amazing things for their children. As loving parents, we want to do what we can to make sure that they are happy, healthy, and safe.
That fact can be clearly seen in Bangkok, thanks to a loving father that many people refer to fondly as Uncle Dam. He is the father to a disabled son and he does what he can to care for his needs.
In order to pay for his son’s treatment, he will walk some 5 miles every day pushing a cart to sell shaved ice. His son’s medical expenses are high, but he does what he can to cover them.
Perhaps the most amazing thing about what he does is the fact that he only sells a cup of shaved ice for $0.30. That’s an extremely low price for a bowl of shaved ice filled with other toppings, such as jelly, syrup, milk, corn, and bread.
At one time, Uncle Dam charged a higher price for what he sold but he had some regular customers that complained. He wanted to make sure that he was selling enough every day so he lowered the price to something that was more affordable for them.
Although life is tough for this man in Thailand, he gets by because he thinks of his son and how much he wants to help him. When the child was born, there weren’t any complications but physical disabilities began to show up by the time he was eight years old.
At that point, the mother decided that she could not handle taking care of him so she left the father and children behind. Although it was devastating to him and he even attempted suicide, he picked himself up by his bootstraps and started working in order to pay for his son’s medical expenses.
He says: “I continue to live by focusing on what is present and reminding myself to always be happy. Past stories need not be repeated and we all need to find happiness in our own way. The future is unpredictable, so let’s not worry too much about it.”
