When I was growing up, neither I nor any of my friends talked to our parents about “female issues.” Our mothers told us briefly what we needed to do and it was never addressed again. The pads and other supplies just magically showed up in our bathroom. However, kids today are much more open about these things. I can remember my son’s school bus driver calling me one afternoon to tell me something my son had said on the bus. She said that he got on the bus without his sister and someone asked him where she was. To my bus driver’s horror, my son blurted out, “She’s on her period and having cramps!” When I told my daughter this happened, she just shrugged. OMG! I would have been mortified if my brother did that when I was a child. Or if he even knew what a period was! Times have changed, and I think it’s for the better. Enjoy this story below. Best dad ever.
Dad: Hey I’m gonna go grocery shopping do you need anything?
Me: Uuuhhh….
Me: contemplates whether or not I should ask him to get me pads since I need them desperately.
Dad: Anything at all?
Me: Uh… Yeah… Can you get me some pads?
Dad: Sure.
Me: Are you serious? Wouldn’t you be embarrassed?
Dad: Natalie, I’m a 56 year old man who has been buying pads for your mother for over 20 years. No I’m not embarrassed.
Me: But I thought guys get squeamish when we ask them to buy this stuff for us.
Dad: Boys are squeamish. Men will step out and buy you as many pads and tampons as you need. A man will understand that you cannot control your cycle and that this is a natural bodily process. So, if you ever find a guy who’s too embarrassed to buy your pad, just bleed on everything he owns.
Me: OMG DAD!!
