In 2013, U.S Marine Lance Corporal Myles Kerr was preparing for a 5K charity run taking place in Charlevoix, Michigan. However, the event would go on to become memorable for reasons the soldier never imagined.
While running, Kerr was approached by a shy 9-year-old boy who was also in the race. However, the child was having difficulty keeping up with his group of friends and fell behind. Boden Fuchs, the 9-year-old, wasn’t sure what to do. After he noticed the Marine running beside him, he asked the soldier if he could run with him.
The 19-year-old Marine was also testing his endurance by wearing combat boots and gear during the run. However, this kind young man decided to slow down his pace to run with the boy and encourage him to keep going.
For those not familiar with Marine Corps culture, I can tell you from experience this is par for the course. They emphasize loyalty and most truly live by those values day by day.
It was clear that for Kerr, taking first place with his fellow Marines was not as important as helping this struggling little boy cross the finish line.
It’s so wonderful that this special moment was captured for the world to see the potential we all have to help each other.
As for Kerr, the Marine doesn’t feel he did anything heroic that day. He was simply doing what he knew was right. The soldier went on Twitter and said that he did what anyone would have done, reports ABC.
Kerr’s recruited posted an image of the pair online, and it soon went viral once people learned about this heartwarming story.
Kerr told ABC News that the little boy’s family also gifted him with a $100 restaurant voucher to dine at the establishment.
