When it comes to our individual personalities, there are many things that may define us. We might think about our voice, character or perhaps even our ability to make people laugh. Anything that we do that makes us stand out is certainly going to be something that is noteworthy about us and it is something that people are going to recognize about us as well. At times, there may even be something that we own involved, such as the type of house that we own or perhaps even our car. It’s not that the car makes us who we are, but it is an extension of our personality.
Nobody knows this better than Grace Braeger. When it comes to automobiles, some people switch them out every year and other people may keep them for a decade or so but for Grace, it has been the same automobile for over 60 years. She purchased the ’57 Chevy on October 15, 1957, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Since that time, she has been driving the same automobile, and that is over 6 decades! In 1957, she traded in a 1950 Chevy and paid $2500 for the ’57. These days, she is still driving around town in the same automobile and even has a personalized license plate to show her love of the car.
When Braeger purchased the vehicle, it had 4239 miles on it. 60 years later, it has over 122,000 miles. She said, “I just never saw a need for another car.” Almost everything else is the original, including the power steering, the V-8 engine and the interior. She did have the transmission replaced.
In 1987, she noticed that she could see through the floorboard so she did have them replaced as well. She still drives the Chevy to her doctor’s appointments and to the grocery store but for most of the year, the Chevy is in her garage to protect it from the rain and snow in her Wisconsin home.
