OK, first of all, I have a confession of my own to make. My teen years were in the 1980s and the era of big hair, so I make no judgment on the beautiful ladies in these photos. I pulled off hairstyles that I would never attempt now. However, I can safely express my astonishment and admiration for how these ladies made all of this happen with their hair and how they went about their daily lives without having their hair trap them in dangerous situations. People have been changing their hairstyles and other things about their appearances since the beginning of time. Even the Bible says a woman’s hair is her crowning glory, so it’s no wonder women love to change up their looks.
Fads come and go, and what’s amazing is that something that was in vogue one decade may make a comeback in another decade. For example, some of the hairstyles below may remind you of a wonderful singer who died too young, Amy Winehouse. During her days of stardom, many young women started teasing their hair to make it look like hers. And who knows? Simple seems to be in, but hair trends can always change. In the U.S., the bouffant hairstyle became popular because it was a favorite of former First Lady Jackie Kennedy. Her super-teased hairstyle was so popular that American women began to emulate her, but her looks became popular in other parts of the world, too.
Frankly, I applaud these ladies. They took things to new heights (haha) at a time not long after a very conservative era. They decided to go the extra mile (high) and find a look that was uniquely theirs. Let’s explore some of the best styles of the 1960s.
1. Her hair is bigger than all of the rest of her put together.
2. A perfectly elegant look with her short jumpsuit.
3. These ladies look like they’re wearing helmets. I wonder how they looked at the end of the run?
4. This could have been the first of the grunge beehive, maybe?
5. The mullet before the mullet was cool!
6. A gorgeous bombshell beehive.
7. I just wonder how much time they had to spend on their hair every morning?
8. The beehive to end all beehives.
9. Which came first? The Christmas tree or the beehive?
10. I fear that she’ll topple over from the weight of her hair.
11. Her hair is bigger than she is (but I love those slicked over bangs).
12. She did this with her hair every morning and looked after kids, too? Wow. My hero!
13. I don’t know if it’s a beehive or an updo. But I like it.
14. I’ve seen Dolly Parton with a look like this. Is this Dolly? Adorable!
