A 23-year-old dad from Michigan is celebrated as a local hero after running into a burning house to save his twin baby daughters.
The incident took place on July 17, 2021. Ray Lucas and Shi’Ann, his girlfriend, had left their 18-month-old twin girls with Ray’s mother so they could go grocery shopping at a nearby store.
But, when they returned 15 minutes later, the home was in flames with their precious babies inside!
Ray had to rely mostly on his memory of the home’s three-floor layout to find his way down to the basement. There he discovered the children still in their cribs. One of the babies was standing in her crib while her sister was lying down quietly. Both were likely shocked and confused during the commotion because flames and smoke surrounded them.
Ray immediately grabbed his girls and held them close to protect them from the fire and smoke while retracing his steps back up to the first floor.
Meanwhile, Ray’s mom had run out of the house to get help, leaving the children inside.
The dad’s heroics did not end there. He also managed to save one of his nieces on the second floor. The home was no longer accessible, so he had his niece jump out o the window, assuring her that he would be there to catch her. After he saved her, the little girl was safe and unharmed.
However, the same could not be said for the hero, who suffered third-degree burns to his face, neck, and arms. While his twin daughters also suffered severe burns and had to be treated in intensive care at Children’s Hospital.
The children sustained second-degree burns on their arms, face, and legs, with one child requiring intense physical therapy before she could regain mobility in her arms.
Lucas also lost his home along with all of his family’s possessions due to the fire. His aunt started a GoFundMe page, and so far, the fund has reached over $286,000 thanks to the assistance of 8,000 donors.
So far, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
