Abigail Van Buren (her real name was Pauline Friedman Phillips) ran a newspaper advice column called “Dear Abby” for many years, as did her identical twin sister, Esther. Esther’s column was called “Dear Ann Landers,” and was almost as successful as her sister’s column. In these columns, people would write in and ask all sorts of questions and the sisters were known for quick and witty comebacks as well as genuine advice. The two sisters had different styles, but both were read by millions of people. Ann Landers responded to her readers with detailed, homey advice, while Abby’s advice was often risque and flippant, and some were excellent one-liners. Below, you’ll see some

Dear Abby, I’ve suspected that my husband has been fooling around, and when confronted with the evidence, he denied everything and said it would never happen again.

Dear Abby, You told some women whose husband had lost all interest in sex to send him to a doctor. Well, my husband lost all interest in sex and he is a doctor. Now, what do I do?
