When Barry Darcy comes onto the stage at “Ireland’s Got Talent” in 2019, he said he’s from Cork, Ireland. When asked why he’s there today, he starts crying and says, “It’s a sad story. I thought I’d never sing again.” He explains that he had a herniated disk in his back and just one day, he couldn’t get out of the bed. The doctors gave him only a 50/50 chance to ever walk again, and he said, “I took it.” He gives his wife and his kids credit for taking everything on their shoulders while he focused on getting better. According to Barry, they have a ferocious love for one another because of everything they’ve been through and they’re a “solid, solid unit.”
The song Barry chooses to sing is, “The Wonder of You,” a song famously covered by Elvis Presley. Barry said that the song means a lot to him because as he sat back in his wheelchair watching his family handle everything and saw all that they were doing, he was amazed at how much his family cared for him, accepted him, and understood him. He explains that the words in that song, “no one else can understand me,” are exactly what he feels for his wife, Fiona, and their children. Backstage, his family is waiting for him and giving him the thumbs up. Then the music starts and he begins singing. He sounds a lot like Elvis, but maybe even better (no blasphemy intended!).
The song talks about how “when no one else can understand me, and when everything I do is wrong, you give me hope and consolation. You give me strength to carry on.” The judges are loving his performance as they sway in their seats. When he’s finished singing, the audience starts to cheer wildly and leap to their feet. All four of the judges give Barry a standing ovation. Then a judge does what everyone in that auditorium wants one of the judges to do. He gets up from his seat and walks over to the Golden Buzzer, pushing it as the crowd goes wild. Barry starts crying (and some of the judges do, too) as Barry’s family rushes onto the stage. The judge says that Barry “got to me, and I loved everything about it.”
Someone asks, “How do you feel,” and Barry says, “I feel amazing, obviously, I don’t know what to think about it.” When Barry’s wife gets a chance to speak, she says, “He’s an inspiration. He doesn’t give up. Never, never gives up.” That’s apparent. Enjoy this inspiring video.
