The living legend who is singer and songwriter Kelly Clarkson won America’s heart when she became the first winner of “American Idol.” Since winning Idol, Kelly has gone on in her career to win four American Music Awards, three Grammy Awards, two Academy of Country Music Awards, and three MTV Video Music Awards. Billboard even hailed Kelly Clarkson as “one of pop music’s greatest singers,” honoring her with the coveted “Powerhouse Award” for her unbelievable vocals. Kelly is a record-breaker as well. She became the first artist in history to reach the tops of all of these Billboard charts: adult pop, pop, dance, country, and adult contemporary.
As is often the case with extremely successful people, Kelly’s path to fame and fortune wasn’t an easy one. When she was a little girl, her parents had a bitter divorce, leaving Kelly broken and afraid. Kelly’s best-selling song “Because of You” was a song written by Kelly when she was 16, and it helped her get through her emotional distress. In that song, Kelly clearly outlines how damaged she was from the divorce and addresses both her mother and her father. Kelly felt particularly betrayed by her father and found it hard to learn to trust. That all changed when she started dating talent manager Brandon Blackstock in 2012.
Blackstock is the son of Kelly’s former manager and the former stepson of country music legend Reba McEntire. After marrying Kelly in 2013 in Walland, Tennessee, Brandon began managing Kelly’s career and has been her manager since then. Together, the couple has two children, a little boy and a little girl. By all accounts, they’re a happy family and Kelly’s husband stands by her through thick and thin. The song “Piece by Piece” was written by Kelly with the help of producer Greg Kurstin. For Kelly, this song was a sequel to “Because of You,” and added in her happy ending. she says she got the idea for the song after talking with her sister about their life growing up.
“Piece by Piece” is written as a first-person narrative from Kelly to her dad. It expresses that while her dad abandoned her and she was left broken, her loving husband the father of her children will never do that. It’s also a promise to their little girl.
