When I first got married and moved in with my wife, I situated my desk right beside a window. I didn’t realize that I would enjoy being near a window so much, but I found myself watching the birds and squirrels outside the window. Before long, I started thinking about ways to attract more birds to the area, so I started putting out bird feeders and even a birdbath. It wasn’t long before I took the next step and installed a couple of hummingbird feeders right outside my window. The cats and I love watching the birds frolic around and enjoy the seed I put out there.
What I didn’t know at the time was that I could attract more hummingbirds to the area outside my window if I installed moving water. Now, I’ve not done this yet, but it’s in my plans after seeing a video on YouTube that showed a flock of 30 hummingbirds enjoying a mesmerizing bath together. Most birds love to take a bath and splash around in clean water, and that includes the tiny hummingbirds. Although the little birds will stop at shallow baths if they need to, they actually prefer to get their feathers completely wet by flying through a gentle spray of water or even just chilling out by sitting in it.
If you want to make your yard hummingbird welcoming, installing some moving water is one way to do it. Unlike some other birds, hummingbirds really enjoy a little shower rather than a full soak. See, their primary concern with bathing is to get their feathers nice and clean. Their physical hydration needs are met by the sugar water they slurp up, along with the liquid flower nectar. Yum, right? Also, they rinse off in the rain, in the spray of waterfalls when they can, and even splash in streams.
A photographer with the username wildwingsla captured some stunning footage that shows a charm (that’s what hummingbird flocks are called) of these cute little birds just chirping away and enjoying a fountain. Watch the video below.
