When Victor Huang was diving several years ago, he wanted to try out his brand new camera. a snazzy state-of-the-art Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT2. A dedicated diver and photographer, Victor was diving in Wahine Memorial, Wellington, New Zealand when he spotted a large wild octopus. However, while he was filming, to Victor’s astonishment, the octopus brazenly snatched the camera away from him and then swam away with it as he was steadily filming himself escaping. The octopus ended up filming a chase that lasted for several long minutes, and it probably seemed like an eternity to Victor, who just wanted his camera back.
In the video caption, Victor explained what happened. He said that he was trying to film the octopus when it dashed suddenly and came directly towards him. To Victor’s surprise, the octopus ripped the “shiny new camera” from his hands and swam off, and during all of this, the camera was still recording. Victor described the octopus as behaving like a “naughty shoplifter” when it was swimming away rapidly. The chase went on for five full minutes. At that point, Victor was able to place his speargun underneath the octopus, and that made the curious octopus even more intrigued.
The octopus had the camera in its mouth, but when it grabbed the speargun, it gave Victor a chance to reach in and grab the camera from the mouth of this mischievous sea creature. Victor wanted to clarify that he in no way felt threatened by the animal during the ordeal. He was just astonished at the “confusing behavior” and how the octopus dashed off with his camera like he was a thief. Victor described the animal as a “cheeky octopus.” I’m sure when you’re diving, you never know what you’re going to encounter. The ocean is full of wonders and delights.
