All baby animals are cute, and it’s hard to know which ones are the cutest. Regardless of which baby animals you love to watch and enjoy, when someone captures video footage of wild animals, the videos tend to go viral on the internet, and that’s exactly what happened when someone uploaded a video of some baby sloths playing and chattering away to each other. Their creepy little smiles and sleepy little eyes have made these adorable little creatures creep their way into the collective heart of YouTubers all over the world. But what are sloths exactly? Aren’t they lazy animals who just sleep all the time? There’s some confusion about their place in the animal kingdom.
As it turns out, sloths are closely related to anteaters. They’re super-tiny when they’re born, weighing in at a whopping 10 ounces. You can usually find them clinging closely to their mother’s fur. Although they have a reputation for sleeping and being lazy, baby sloths are born with their eyes wide open. Also, newborn sloths have all of their fur already and they’re born ready to start climbing. Pretty energetic for a “lazy” creature! Interestingly, sloths live out their entire lives on one tree. Contrary to popular belief, sloths don’t sleep all the time. When they’re in the wild, they sleep about as much as the average human being sleeps, which is about seven to eight hours per day.
However, sloths in captivity sleep more. This is partly because they can because they have more time to rest without having to find all their own food. Also, however, it could be because they’re in captivity. People who are in jail sleep longer, too and this probably isn’t a coincidence. Although they don’t sleep as much as people believe, sloths don’t move around much, which is why they’re seen as lazy. In fact, sloths are so sedentary that they sometimes are found with algae growing on their fur. Imagine if you sat so long in your chair that dust settles on you and starts to build up. It would be similar to that.
