Parenting is terrifying. From the minute our children are born, we begin to fear for their safety. And it doesn’t even have to be something they’re doing deliberately wrong. They can be influenced by outside factors, and by outside people. Since the beginning of time, I suspect that every mom has been in fear that her kids would get in with the bad caveman kids from the next cave over. It’s a universal fear among mothers and fathers. Raising kids these days is even more challenging because of the wide variety of things there are in the world that are harmful. My grandmother never had to face the challenges of being confronted with drugs. I’m not even sure she ever had a taste of alcohol.
However, nowadays, kids have access to things we never even dreamed of when we were kids, and frankly, it’s hard to know what to expect. Most households have every adult in the household working, so there is less time spent watching children and especially teenagers who are old enough, for the most part, to fend for themselves. And while in the old days, parents were busier when it came to having to do things around the house, these days, those busy activities have been replaced with the technology that makes chores easier. But humans abhor a vacuum so we’ve filled it without activities outside the home.
Because of this, it’s not unusual as a parent to discover something unexpected in a child’s bedroom. In the story below, the mom goes into freakout mode when she finds something unusual in her child’s room.

I’m a parent, and believe me: there are times when we’re delighted to be wrong. What a relief for Ashley’s mom.
