For decades and longer, youth had been the standard by which society views beauty and desirability. To be fair, a lot of this has to do with what the world of fashion and the media put to us, and we take our cues from that. For a long time, fashion runways have not had any diversity at all, including older models. However, that’s changing. In recent years, there’s been a shift at least in that one area of representation. Fashion houses and marketers are realizing that older people buy clothing and products, too, and they look really good in clothes. It’s a refreshing change. Along with this change, both women and men are becoming more comfortable with embracing the reality of who they are.
For consumers, it comes down to wanting to see a realistic look in catalogs and on websites. Most of can’t relate to the average 19-year-old supermodel (gorgeous though they are). We need to see how an article of clothing looks on someone who looks something like us. For women, especially, there’s a lot of pressure to look youthful. We start dying our hair when it begins to grey and until things change a lot more, many women will continue to do that. However, we’re also seeing more and more women and men embracing the gray. The new attitude seems to be that as long as someone is healthy, they’re going to be beautiful regardless of wrinkles and gray hair.
When it comes to modeling, older models are becoming the newest beauty trend. That’s not just women, though. As you can see in the images below, these older male models are rocking their looks. They look stylish, handsome, and healthy. There’s nothing fake about these guys.
