Baby Shark is a phenomenon that’s quickly become a tradition that parents will pass down for generations. While in some cases replaying this song over and over can legally be considered torture, there’s no question that our little ones can’t get enough of this catchy tune that took the world by storm in 2016. The song’s simple lyrics, catchy hooks, and charming melody soon turned Baby Shark into a multi-million dollar franchise. In fact, it’s estimated that the franchise took in about $125 million in 2020. The song was made popular by a South Korean education company called Pinkfong. And by November 2020, the Pinkfong version of the song earned over 7.4 billion views on YouTube.
However, Baby Shark started out as a campfire song. While the exact origins are rather murky, many believe it was something created by camp counselors and was inspired by the 1975 horror classic “Jaws.” There was a dance version of Baby Shark called “Kleiner Hai” (which is German for Little Shark) released in 2007. It became pretty popular and peaked at number 25 on the Germa charts. It’s still trendy today with German children. And in 2011, a kids camp DJ named Johnny Only came up with a version of “Baby Shark,” which became very popular locally. However, it wasn’t until Pinkfong released their version in 2016 that Baby Shark became the global brand we all know and love today. And for the Christmas season, Pinkfong released a special Baby Shark “Santa Shark” song that includes generous amounts of holiday spirit.
Santa shark doesn’t attempt to change the formula; it still includes the catchy “do, do, do, do, do, do” chorus that sticks in your brain like gum. And as you would expect, Santa Shark soon became a huge hit in its own right.
The song’s video features elf sharks, Reindeer sharks, and of course, a Santa Shark.
And since its premiere in November 2018, the video has gotten over 30 million views on YouTube!
