There are few things worse than getting pulled over by a police officer. Just something about seeing those blue lights flashing in your rearview mirror sends a feeling of dread through the body. Most people end up getting a costly traffic ticket, and even if you just get a warning instead of an actual citation, it’s no fun. For a black man in America, it’s particularly alarming, even when the officer is a friend of yours. That’s why when Jarred Wright wasn’t delighted when he was driving with his wife Nikki in Hurst, Texas, and got pulled over by a cop. When the officer came to the window, Jarred’s first words were, “Hello, officer.” Then he realized that this was an officer he personally knew and someone who he counted as a friend.
At that point, the conversation became less stilted, but Jarred was still nervous. For one thing, for some strange reason, he didn’t have his wallet and license with him, according to Buzzfeed. He probably forgot them at home. It happens. So the officer, Todd Colichia, was excited to see his friend, and said, “Hey, brother, how’s it been?” Jarred told him that he had just gotten released from the hospital. See, Jarred is a U.S. Army veteran who served in Afghanistan. From his experiences in war, Jarred suffers from anxiety and PTSD and told Buzzfeed that “it’s been rough” as he described panic attacks and sleepless nights. Not to mention hospital visits.
As it turns out, that’s how Jarred and Officer Colichia got to know each other. Jarred made a panicked 9-1-1 call late one night and Colichia was the first responder. The officer sat on the ground with Jarred and talked him down until he felt better. The pair connected and have been friends ever since. They found a common bond since they had both served. During the police stop, the two men chatted a bit before the officer got straight to the point. He informed Jarred that the had pulled him over because there was a child in his vehicle who wasn’t strapped into a car seat. Jarred was confused because he didn’t have a child in the car. However, the officer insisted that he did, and pointed to Jarred’s wife, Nikki, who was filming the exchange between the two men.
In Nikki’s other hand, she was holding a positive pregnancy test. When it dawned on Jarred that the child the officer was talking about was a baby his wife was carrying, he was astonished and delighted. This is perhaps the most fun pregnancy announcement ever. Watch this heartwarming video below.
