When the American musical drama “Footloose” broke into the scene in 1984, it was a revolution. The storyline revolves around a teenager named Ren McCormack (played by Kevin Bacon) who has moved with his mother from Chicago to a small western town. Apparently the town has a ban on dancing, which Bacon’s character is determined to break by bucking the law, which was passed by the town’s city council. Of course, there’s a pretty girl involved, and Bacon’s character starts to fall for a teenage girl named Ariel, who is just as rebellious as he is. Unfortunately, Ariel has an abusive boyfriend and a strict preacher father.
Like all high school students, the students in this town want a senior prom, so Bacon’s character and Ariel are determined to overturn the insane law so that they can have their much-loved dance. Because it’s an upbeat American movie made in the 1980s, Bacon’s character naturally wins the day and the students get their prom. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Kevin Bacon’s most iconic movie, “Footloose,” Jimmy has Kevin Bacon as his guest on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” Unfortunately, Jimmy reveals an “official” decree that outlaws dancing on “The Tonight Show.” The audience boos and Jimmy tells them to shut up because rules are rules.
However, behind the scenes, Kevin Bacon hears the decree and is sitting on a black couch backstage. Outraged, Bacon says, “Dancing is illegal? Jump back. This is The Tonight Show, there has to be dancing!” Then he begins his iconic “Footless” scene in the back, hip gyrations and all! As he starts to dance down the hallway, he pulls his sweatshirt off as business seems to go on around him. Honestly, Kevin has all the moves he had back in the day, although we suspect he has a double for some of those flips and acrobatic feats.
Then when he’s through with his solo dance, the “Footloose” song starts playing and Kevin and the group around him start busting out in dance. Watch the video below for a trip back to the fabulous 1980s.
