I grew up in a time and place where we never (and I mean NEVER) talked to our parents about things like periods, bras, and other stuff that girls deal with. I would have been positively mortified to ask my dad to buy me the supplies I needed for this personal stuff. I’m embarrassed talking about personal stuff like this even now, but I force myself to because I know it’s natural and my embarrassment is something that’s my problem. I was amazed by my daughter’s generation and how open they are about talking about these important topics. Kudos to today’s young women. As for my husband, he’s never had a moment’s hesitation buying anything I need for me. The only confusion is the number of choices available, so here’s my tip: find a photo of exactly what you want online and text it to them. That way, they’ll have it when they’re facing an aisle with a zillion different types of pads and tampons. Enjoy this great story. It’s probably fictional, but very relevant.
Dad: Hey I’m gonna go grocery shopping do you need anything?
Me: Uuuhhh….
Me: contemplates whether or not I should ask him to get me pads since I need them desperately.
Dad: Anything at all?
Me: Uh… Yeah… Can you get me some pads?
Dad: Sure.
Me: Are you serious? Wouldn’t you be embarrassed?
Dad: Natalie, I’m a 56 year old man who has been buying pads for your mother for over 20 years. No I’m not embarrassed.
Me: But I thought guys get squeamish when we ask them to buy this stuff for us.
Dad: Boys are squeamish. Men will step out and buy you as many pads and tampons as you need. A man will understand that you cannot control your cycle and that this is a natural bodily process. So, if you ever find a guy who’s too embarrassed to buy your pad, just bleed on everything he owns.
Me: OMG DAD!!
