When I was pregnant with my first child many years ago, I was about seven months pregnant when I got a call saying that my beloved grandmother had been hospitalized. She lived five hours away and that five hours would be increased to about 10 hours because it was winter time and I had to drive over icy mountain dark deserted highways to get to her hometown. However, I knew I needed to be there. My grandmother and I had a special bond and there was no way I was going to let her go through this alone. They feared she was dying, and I wasn’t going to be deterred. I packed a bag quickly, along with some healthy snacks, and headed out.
I was about halfway on my journey and I know I was driving faster than the speed limit. I was always driving faster than was safe on those dark icy roads. However, I knew that every minute mattered and that my grandmother could die at any time. As you’d expect, the inevitable happened. Small country towns are notorious for being speed traps. That means that the police officers, often the only cop in the entire town, lay in wait for travelers to speed through their towns so that they can give them a ticket. This is how the town’s bills get paid, after all. That’s a system I detest, but that’s a different story for another day. The point is, when I got pulled over, I explained to the officer what was going on. He let me go with a warning, but he added something else to it. He said, “Your grandmother won’t want you to get hurt and hurt your unborn child trying to get to her.” I knew he was right and I slowed down. This lady had a similar experience. Read her story below.
Police officers get a bad rap, but honestly, most police officers become public servants so that they can save lives and make a difference. Are there bad cops out there? Sure there are. But we only hear about the bad stories, rarely the many good stories.
If you treat police officers respectfully and give them their safety, you’ll usually have a good experience. This lady certainly did, and this officer went above and beyond the call of duty.
